Today, the majority of the lights you see in many places, such as on the Las Vegas strip, are made from mercury and argon and colored with phosphors. Other colors are created by using a variety of other gases, such as argon, mercury, helium, krypton and xenon, according to the Edison Tech Center. Argon makes blue light, and neon makes the clear orange-red that is familiar in neon signs, said Bill Concannon, a neon-sign artist and owner of Aargon Neon, a sign shop in Crockett, California. First developed by French engineer Georges Claude in 1902, neon lights create light by applying electricity to neon or argon in a sealed glass tube. The most common use of the gas is in neon signs, which have a century-long history. When liquefied, neon is an important cryogenic refrigerant that has more than 40 times the refrigerating capacity per volume than liquid helium and more than three times that of liquid hydrogen, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry. The discovery of the neon in these disks helps astronomers track the gas content around the young stars during different stages of their development in order to better understand how planets form. According to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, neon has been discovered in the planet-forming disks around young stars.Death may be caused by errors in judgment, confusion, or being unconscious. When inhaled, it may cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting and loss of consciousness. While generally inert and nontoxic, neon is also known as a simple asphyxiant, according to Lenntech. There are several researchers, with articles published in Nature and Foundations of Chemistry, who want to rearrange the Periodic Table to move helium next to hydrogen and promote neon to be the lightest of the noble gases due to properties of helium and the number of electrons in its outer shell.Due to its relative inertness, neon does not form any known stable compounds in nature, according to Chemicool. All noble gases conduct electricity, light up when a current runs through them, and are odorless, colorless and monatomic (exist as individual atoms). These are the most stable and least reactive elements due to having full valence shells (the outer shell has the max number of electrons, two for helium, eight for the rest). Neon, along with helium, argon, krypton and xenon, make up the group known as noble gases.Neon has the smallest temperature range (2.6 degrees C or 4.7 degrees F) for which it is a liquid, according to Chemicool.According to Minerals Education Coalition, neon is primarily obtained from liquefying air.Neon is created in large mass stars when the internal pressure of the star is great enough to fuse carbon atoms into neon atoms, according to Berkeley Lab.In Earth's atmosphere, neon only composes about 0.0018 percent, according to Chemicool.Neon is the fourth most abundant element in the universe, according to the Jefferson Laboratory.Neon (Image credit: general-fmv, Andrei Marincas Shutterstock) Who knew? From those elements' places on the Periodic Table, he deduced that there was a yet unknown element between the two noble gases. Ramsay had previously discovered argon in 1894 and was the first to isolate helium in 1895. Most common isotopes: Ne-20 (90.48 percent natural abundance), Ne-22 (9.25 percent natural abundance), Ne-21 (0.27 percent natural abundance)Ĭhemists William Ramsay of Scotland and Morris Travers of England discovered neon in 1898, according to Chemicool.Number of isotopes (atoms of the same element with a different number of neutrons): 19.Boiling point: minus 410.94 degrees F (minus 246.08 degrees C).Melting point: minus 415.46 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 248.59 degrees Celsius).Density: 0.0008999 grams per cubic centimeter.Atomic weight (average mass of the atom): 20.1797.Atomic symbol (on the Periodic Table of Elements): Ne.Atomic number (number of protons in the nucleus): 10.Under certain laboratory conditions, neon can form a compound with fluorine, but is otherwise nonreactive, according to the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Laboratory. Like its noble gas comrades, neon is odorless and colorless.

And Kleiner’s most prominent growth-stage investment partner, Mary Meeker, did just leave to start her own firm. Of course, $600 million is by no means a tiny fund. Three weeks ago, the 47-year-old firm closed on $600 million for its eighteenth flagship fund, touting a plan to go “back to the future” and focus on early-stage with the philosophy that “venture is a non-scalable, boutique craft.” Silicon Valley stalwart Kleiner Perkins is among the latest to hop on the smaller-is-better bandwagon. Adding more capital to the pot, the thinking goes, likely does more to inflate valuations than foster great companies. While VCs compete to back massively scalable startups, the common wisdom is the venture capital industry itself does not scale especially well. The influx of small and mid-sized funds serves as a reminder that supergiant funds are somewhat of an aberration for the venture capital industry. Newcomers are rolling out fresh early-stage funds, and even established VCs are opting in many cases to keep fund size constant or even a bit smaller. venture fundraising data for 2019 reveals a lot of smaller, more focused funds closing on capital. Ever since the rollout of the $100 billion SoftBank Vision Fund, established VCs have been outdoing each other to raise ever-bigger funds.īut let’s not write the epitaph on smaller funds. Over the past year, we’ve written a lot about the rise of supergiant venture capital funds.
In simple terms, the number of channels you can access depends on the signals that are broadcast in your local area. either losing audio and video, or a clear picture without the ghost image. With a digital signal, the symptoms of multipath would be the same as a weak signal, i.e. Once again, this is still viewable, albeit annoying. With an analog signal, this would cause a "ghost" image, which is a faint duplicate of the picture and slightly displaced. With a digital signal that is too weak, the video and audio will cut in and out, or may even disappear altogether.Īnother problem is multipath, where some of the TV signals bounces off structures like tall buildings and arrive slightly later than the signals on a direct path. If a digital signal is slightly weak, it would however still be clear and sharp. Although this is very annoying, the picture can still be seen or perceived. A weak analog signal will, for example, appear as a grainy or snowy picture on the TV screen. You can eliminate the cable and associated subscription costs to enjoy clear reception and more television channels in the comfort of your home living room, or business office reception area.ĭigital TVs have far better clarity and quality than analog TVs, but a weak signal often causes problems with reception. 100 miles radius.Ī TV signal booster and amplifier helps HDTV antenna or standard TV antennas catch many channels that would otherwise be difficult to access and see. New Digital HDTV antennas together with a booster will allow you to watch your favorite cable television shows without having to pay for an ongoing cable subscription.Ī TV antenna booster will give you access to beautifully clear digital television shows for both standard analog and high definition TVs, and will catch all signals within approx. A TV signal booster kit consists of a HDTV antenna plus signal booster that extends TV station broadcast coverage into your home or apartment building by boosting or amplifying existing TV channel signals for clearer audio and video reception.Ĭable antennas have been around for years and have gradually become old technology. “Overall,” notes Diego Gomez-Nicola, an associate professor of neuroscience at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, “these studies add to a body of knowledge supporting the impact of inflammation on dementia, and provide promising targets for future clinical studies. The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is a structural and functional barrier necessary for brain homeostasis, and it plays an important role in the realization of neural function and in protecting the brain from damage by circulating toxins and pathogens. “We now have two biomarkers that tell you exactly where the blood-brain barrier is leaking, so you can select patients for treatment and make decisions about how long you give the drug.”Įxperts commenting on the two studies generally welcome the findings but warn against jumping to the conclusion that they describe ways to reverse dementia in humans. There is also scope to develop the drug that they used as a way to repair a leaky blood-brain barrier to slow and perhaps even reverse some of the problems that it can cause. The researchers suggest that the two sets of findings offer two new biomarkers that could help doctors identify individuals who might have a blood-brain barrier problem: one using MRI (which can detect leaky barriers), and the other using EEG (which can detect abnormal brain rhythms). They found the same match in aged mice, mice prone to Alzheimer’s disease, and rats with induced epilepsy.īiomarkers for impaired blood-brain barriers In EEGs of people with epilepsy, they found that PSWEs that occurred between seizures matched areas of leaky blood-brain barrier. People with Alzheimer’s disease may frequently experience epileptic events, but they and their doctors are not necessarily aware of them.Īdvancing age is a risk factor for both Alzheimer’s and epilepsy, and experimental and clinical data support the idea of a link between the two conditions.įor the second study, the team analyzed EEG readings from people with Alzheimer’s disease and found an EEG signature for what they describe as “paroxysmal slow wave events (PSWEs).”įrom the EEGs, they saw how the rate of PSWEs seemed to match the level of cognitive impairment of the individuals. Kaufer and Friedman are also co-senior authors of another recent Science Translational Medicine study that took a closer look at inflammatory fog in leaky blood-brain barriers. The leakier the blood-brain barrier becomes, the easier it is for substances that cause inflammation to cross over from the bloodstream into brain tissue and damage cells. The findings should help scientists better understand the decline of brain functions involving inflammation that can accompany aging and conditions such as dementia.Īn increasing body of research - including imaging studies by co-senior study author Alon Friedman, of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel and Dalhousie University in Canada - shows that the blood-brain barrier becomes less efficient with age. Kaufer explains that within days of abolishing the “inflammatory fog,” the aged brain starts to function more like a young brain. “But our new data tell a different story about why the aged brain is not functioning well: It is because of this ‘fog’ of inflammatory load,” she adds. “We tend to think about the aged brain in the same way we think about neurodegeneration: Age involves loss of function and dead cells,” says co-senior study author Daniela Kaufer, a professor of integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley. The researchers then developed and tested a drug that blocked the signaling protein, which goes by the name transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta).Īfter treatment with the drug, the mice showed fewer signs of brain inflammation and an improved ability to learn new tasks that matched the performance of much younger mice. The international team found that the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier activates a signaling protein in brain cells called astrocytes. In a recent Science Translational Medicine study, scientists describe how the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier can trigger brain inflammation and cognitive impairment in aging mice. The blood-brain barrier is a complex set of blood vessel characteristics that help shield the brain from potentially harmful substances in the bloodstream. It seems not to have occurred to these Democrats that they invited class resentment. In the case of Pelosi with a hair stylist and Newsom at a Napa Valley eatery, these lapses seemed especially clueless given that these scolds had casually ignored their own strictures in front of people whose livelihoods have been devastated by their bans. Dianne Feinstein have hectored conservatives for being selfish and not wearing masks - only to be caught on camera not wearing masks. Newsom had joined the Shame Club for California Democrats. He is disappointed in himself, Newsom told reporters Monday after the San Francisco Chronicle reported he had broken his own COVID dicta when he dined recently at the tony French Laundry indoors with friends who happen to be lobbyists or doctors. Many garden spiders are a type of common orb-weaver, but like with all scientific classification, some families are considered separate. For the most part, they lie in wait for small insects, seizing them with their legs and then paralyzing them with a venom that does little to larger creatures. Look for a few species of crab spiders in Florida, including:Ĭrab spiders aren’t considered dangerous for humans or their pets. Most often, they wait with their front legs pulled back, helping make them look like crabs. Instead of spinning webs, these crabs hide in opportunistic locations and ambush their prey. Crab SpidersĬrab spiders get their name from the way they look and how they sit. They’re commonly found in yards and gardens and are great to have around because they eat nuisance insects. While their bite can be painful or cause discomfort, orb-weaver spiders are not considered a threat to humans. The spines are black and red, with a big yellow abdomen, a red underside, and an orange head and legs. Their legs and spines tend to be black with white, orange, or yellow coloring on their backs.Īrrow-shaped orb-weavers have abdomens shaped like flint arrowheads. Spinybacked orb-weavers have six distinct points on their abdomens and can be a wide variety of colors. Most of their body is an orangish color and they’re easy to distinguish from other spiders. The star-bellied orb-weaver for example has a large, crown-shaped abdomen. Many orb-weavers have very distinct shapes and color patterns. Multiple species of orb spiders can be found in Florida including: Many of them tend to build a new web every day, consuming the old web and then resting for an hour or two before constructing the new one. Orb-weaver spiders get their names from the spiral-shaped webs they build. Rarely can a bite result in death, but serious skin damage, nausea, and muscle pain can occur. They can go unnoticed until symptoms appear, as the bites themselves are nearly painless. Recluse bites have a necrotic effect that can damage tissue surrounding the bite location. Populations can be found in single buildings within Florida, but they have no known stable populations. They are especially common in firewood piles and hide under logs and rocks in natural environments. Like widow spiders, recluses tend to love dark areas. They average around 6 mm (1 inch) in body length. They have only six eyes, arranged in three pairs on their face. The surest way to identify a recluse spider is by their eyes. While they tend to be brown in color, both thor marking and overall color can vary drastically. Three species of recluse have been seen in Florida, including the brown recluse, Mediterranean recluse, and Chilean recluse.īrown recluse spiders tend to have a dark violin-shaped marking on their abdomen. Recluse spiders are not native to Florida, but they have been observed throughout the state and are known to establish small populations in scattered locations. The bites are generally not fatal for adults but can cause nausea, difficulty breathing, burning pain, and body shakes. For some, they may experience mild symptoms, but for others, the symptoms can be severe. Venom from widow spiders can affect people differently. They build conical webs in the corners they hide in. In nature, they tend to hide under rocks or logs, but widow spiders adapt easily to urban environments and can be found in outbuildings or other manmade structures. Widow spiders tend to prefer dark, confined spaces. Most females range from 8 to 15 millimeters (0.8 cm to 1.5 cm), while males can be as small as 2 millimeters (0.2 cm). Generally, they have shiny black abdomens and red markings, but widows can also be pale or have lateral stripes. Widow spiders typically share similar color patterns and markings. Southern black widows, Northern black widows, red widows, and brown widows (introduced) can all be found in the Sunshine State. Three widow species are native to Florida, with a fourth being accidentally introduced.
